The naval service of the Honourable East India Company, popularly known as the Bombay Marine, knew its share of adventure; none more than Captain Percival Merewether and the men of his ship "Rapid."
From Mauritius to Teheran, from the Bay of Bengal towards Australia -- weathering fierce naval battles, skirmishes with pirate fleets, and sometimes equally hazardous engagements ashore -- the seas were packed with the stuff that goes to make incident. And action it was that really sparked Merewether and his men in a rousing tale that will give much pleasure to those who like a rattling good yarn.
About the Author Ellis K. Meacham (1913-1998) was a Commander in the US Naval Reserve serving as a gunnery officer in the Pacific during the Second World War. He was an attorney until 1972, when he became a judge in the Chattanooga Municipal Court.

It's different from the other naval fiction of the period! That's a key element in my five star rating. It takes place in South and East Asia and the series isn't about the Royal Navy or the new American Navy. The series is about Honorable East India Company's men of war. I've read all three books and loved each one. One of the most endearing features is the primary character Percival Mereweather is flawed, conflicted, lost at times, and decisive when he needed to be. the main supporting characters flow with the story so that one of the main supporting characters who is introduced in the first pages is present at the end of the series. The series concludes with all of the major plot points resolved.
I also like how Ellis Meacham broke each book down into smaller novellas. Each book had three separate but related stories. that made the books easier and faster for me to read.
My only regret is Meacham only wrote three books. The series could have been longer.
I read the Kindle version. I also used the same review for all three books.

On the Company Service Percival Merewether Book 2 edition by Ellis K Meacham Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is the second in the series and every bit as good. Well within the range of O Brien and others . The Bombay marine job was to protect the shipping of the British east India company. Plenty of sailing and fighting stories. It's a good book .
A wonderful second in the Merewether series by Ellis K Meacham.
Fast paced story of the little known "Bombay Marine" in the early 1800s and our hero Captain Perceval Merewether.
Fans of naval historical fiction will find this series totally enjoyable.
Now working on the third and final book in the series.....such a shame that Meacham only wrote these three terrific books.
Completing the trilogy, thoroughly enjoyable. A fictional exploration of small pieces of the Napoleonic Wars not often discussed. Interesting that in the early 1800s, the HEIC was suppressing the opium trade, but a few decades later than this book, Britain fought the Opium Wars with China to force China to allow the HEIC to import opium. Even then, money talked. The action scenes were well done, and the moral crises aptly described. It is unfortunate that there will be no more books by this author.
I love the lighthearted action fiction but at the same time being very historically accurate. And for a professor, this guys a pretty good writer.
Book 2 in the Percival Merewether should be read following the first installment, in order to maximize recognition and appreciation in this continuation. The action, described in seamanship terms long-since needed, are magnificent in their detail of how men-of-war sailors maneuvered their barks in order to give effective fire at the enemy targets. And they are quite specific in how ships' crews boarded each other and the close quarters fighting that ensued. But our sometimes conflicted protagonist continues to reflect a little of something in all of us the gray lines that sometimes define 100% loyalty and loyalty of another definition. A satisfying read standing alone, this second volume of the trilogy sees Capt. Merewether coming of age and making himself a formidable presence in a complicated range of oceans.
This is the second book in the series. The author continues building a narrative about this very skilled seaman and his adventures while in the service of the company. The story continues with plenty of action and,in this case, improved character development. The only weakness in the entire storyline is the lack of fully developed female characters, although, there is improvement from book #1.
There is plenty of action for every armchair sailor. The details of the naval action, the description of the strategy and tactics all help in building the suspense and action. With this strong a storyline, you want to care about the main character and anticipate the next adventure. The author has found a combination of character and action that is very hard to beat.
Book 2 in the Percival Merewether trilogy sees Merewether temporarily elevated to commodore in the Bombay Marine commanding a squadron tasked with sweeping French privateers from the Bay of Bengal. His luck holds and, I think, it's the third French ship (two in volume one) crippled by a lucky, extreme range shot from the long nine equipped with special sights invented and installed by his friend MacLellan. But in this volume his luck does not hold in a raid on French Mauritius. However, through luck and pluck, he overcomes the obstacles which fate has placed in his way. I want to avoid giving away plot surprises so I will just say that his personal life also takes a turn for the better. This trilogy continues to entertain with a well written story full of twists and turns, adventure, romance, hardships, death, injury and perseverance.
