I love a good murder mystery and Richard Malta's first novel, Evangelist Caper, did not dissappoint. The character development was superb... consistent and believable right down to authentic NY/Long Island/"cop" dialect. The plot twisted and turned such that, just when I began to think I'd figured out whodunit, another plausible twist was introduced to keep me turning the pages. The mix of inner and outer turmoil each character endures along with just a hint of romance makes this a great read. I DIDN'T put it down until I got to the very last page... where yet another cliff-hanger was introduced. Waiting anxiously to see what happens next in the lives of Detective Mike Ryan and his partner, Peggy Younger.Product details

I was pleasantly surprised when I read the "Evangelist Caper" by Richard Malta. It kept my interest right from the beginning. I liked the way Richard developed the characters and had a suspenseful turn everytime I thought I might know the ending. Det. Mike Ryan not only had to deal with cracking a murder case, but also deal with deep personal issues of his own. I look forward to more adventures with Mike and his partner Peggy.
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed Mr. Malta's first novel. I normally do not read murder mysteries or Christian novels but this was suggested and I found it a real thriller! I loved the Long Island setting and the character development was so good I really felt like I knew the characters. It had just enough of mystery, intrigue and faith to make this truly a book I couldn't put down. Looking forward to the next!
In his first novel, Mr. Malta challenges intrigue and murder with a call to spiritual awakening and faith.
While investigating the sensational murder of a famous evangelist, Detective Ryan is forced to the end of himself where he encounters and wrestles with God. (If you want to know the outcome of the wrestling match, you'll just have to read the book--but, here's a hint what is miraculous for man is natural for God!)
This fast-paced, page-turner is an exciting and rewarding read.
The Evangelist Caper is a classic who-done-it murder mystery with a twist. Mr. Malta cleverly develops real feeling characters who are often more than they appear. Throughout the book these characters grow and evolve making for an ever changing social landscape. This book is blessed with duel climaxes. As the murder mystery is heating up the pressures in the personal life of the main character build to a crescendo the resolution of which provides the breakthrough needed for the second climax as the detectives zero in on the killer. I'm looking forward to a sequel!
Richard Malta, in his first novel, created a great whodunnit.
I enjoyed the character development and the behind-the-murder-
case personal issues, of which Mr. Malta wrote with sensitivity
and style. The struggle that Det. Ryan had in his spiritual life
was described with understanding and compassion. The conversion
seemed to be a natural outgrowth of the emotional struggles and
needs which plagued the detective. It was a fast read. I hope
there are sequelae in the partnership of Peggy and Tom Ryan.
